(7) Calhoun County 2.5.2021

Our first stop in Calhoun County was the Historic Central School in Lake City, the city where they have everything but a lake!

The Historic Central School is a 2-story school house with various artefacts from the area and meeting rooms for 4H and alumni groups. The tour guide led us through and let the kids pick out a book as a souvenir.

We then made our way over to one of Iowa’s earliest double arch bridges, also known as rainbow bridges. This pedestrian bridge is now covered in graffiti but makes for a neat backdrop.

After lunch at the Las Flores Mexican Restaurant, we found the other, lesser-known rainbow bridge in town.

We passed through Rockwell City and the old train depot on our hunt for the location of a Bonnie and Clyde robbery.

We couldn’t figure out the exact location based off of the scant information provided on the Internet, but we thought this building looked pretty authentic!

Before dinner we took a short drive around the frozen lake, stopped at a local boutique/thrift store, went to the Lake City Drive-In known for its fried chicken and then finished the night at The Cornerstone Suites. The renovated hotel has themed suites, such as the Bouguereau Suite, the Vermeer Suite, and the Larsson Suite.
