(6) Fremont County 10.10.2020
We stopped at the local Stoner
Drug soda fountain shop that was first opened in 1896.
From Hamburg we headed to
Waubonsie State Park. We visited the Mincer Orchard, which is important to note
it is not a “pick your own” apple orchard but rather more like a farmer’s
market for apples. We did enjoy our scenic hike along the ridge of the Loess
Hills on the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway though! It had beautiful views
of the fall foliage and native prairie. It was an overall easy hike, some hills
but manageable even with younger kids.
After working up an appetite on our hike we stopped at a restaurant/venue at the foot of the Loess Hills, the Whiskey Springs. We’re thinking about making the 2.5-hour trek again just to eat some more delicious food😊
Next up was Sidney. What can we
say, Sidney loves its wild west! The town square is in the shape of horseshoe,
and all of the shops and restaurants are in wild-west style. You can also find
random boot statues scattered throughout the downtown, perfect for a fun
picture! Sidney hosts the Iowa Championship Rodeo that draws 80,000 people a
year. It’s a big deal. Unfortunately, we were not there for the rodeo, but we
were able to go to the Fremont County History Center & Iowa’s Championship
Rodeo Museum, which tells the history of the rodeo. There’s also Penn Drug in
Sidney, but unfortunately it had already closed shop for the day- at 2pm…
We thought Sidney was the last
stop on our trip, but little did we know we would stumble across little Imogene,
whose heritage dwells deep within the Irish roots. We would have bypassed
Imogene but for the looming St. Patrick Catholic Church that stood out like a
beacon drawing us in.
