(24) Hamilton County 7.09.2022

Our first major stop in Hamilton County was Webster City, but we made sure to drive through Blairsburg on the way to see the historic Opera House which still has live music on Friday nights!

Once in Webster City, we couldn’t decide on just one place for breakfast so we did two! We started off at Pete’s Donuts, a newly established donut shop on the main street, which was delicious. We couldn't resist eating our donuts in this cute little "garden" right next door! We then made our way over to the Mornin’ Glory Coffee Shop for a cinnamon roll, smoothies and coffee, which was also wonderful!

We decided to take a little stroll down the main street to look at the murals and some of the old buildings and then headed to West Twin Parks for the kids to play for a bit.

After our stop at the park, we made our way to Wilson Brewer Park, which is a historical complex comprising of the old train depot, a church, log cabins, original 2-story home, and school house, only to find that it was closed for renovations It was still a beautiful park to walk around and we did get a few pictures!

We were able to go to the Kendall Young Library and had a personal tour of the Jane Young House next door. The library in Webster City was amazing both in architecture and what it has to offer for the community- one of the best libraries we’ve been to! What’s really neat about the library is that it is the original library built in 1904 through Kendall Young’s estate, as he willed it to the community upon his death, and his farmland still today funds the library. The Jane Young house, which was Kendall and Jane Young’s house, was beautiful. We loved getting to hear the history of Kendall and Jane Young, who helped establish Webster City in the late 1800’s. The Jane Young House rotates various displays throughout the year; on display now were prom dressed through the ages.

Our next stop in Hamilton County was Jewell, but we thought we might as well make a drive through Kamrar and boy were we glad we did! They had an awesome self-propelling merry-go-round and a neat little antique store- Tempel’s Timeless Treasures.

We spent a few hours shopping the main street in Jewell and also stopped for coffee and treats at Mustard Seed Revival & The Mustard Bean. We would return to Hamilton County just to shop this cute little main street district again! But make sure you come on the weekend as most shops are only open Friday-Saturday.

We had to make a pit stop in Ellsworth because we heard they had some sweet playground equipment, and again, we were not disappointed! We love these small towns and their playgrounds 😊

We did drive through Randall, Iowa, but sadly there was not much left of this little town.

Hamilton County received some extra special time as we met up with Travis’ family at Little Wall Lake to stay in one of their cabins! Before meeting up with the fam, we were fortunate enough to drive by a sign letting us know that the Jewell History Museum was open as it is only open on Sundays.

Then we headed out to the lake and enjoyed some fun fishing, playing in the water, catching toads and lightning bugs, and enjoying a night around the campfire. We would definitely recommend these county park cabins for anyone wanting a fun little getaway right here in Iowa!
