(21) Wayne County 7.02.2022

Our first stop in Wayne County was Humeston where we surprisingly came upon an old war tank! We couldn’t pass up taking a picture!

Fortunately, it was right next to the last train wooden water tower that we were wanting to see.

There’s also a Depot Museum, but unfortunately, it’s only open during city hall hours. We did peak in the windows, and it looks like a really nicely done museum!

We were able to stop and get some home-made goodies at the Grassroots Café.

Next up was Lineville, named as such because it is a small town located right on the border of Iowa and Missouri. We couldn’t resist documenting being in two states at once 😊

Our next stop was at Bob White State Park which had free fishing, with poles and worms provided! Elisha certainly enjoyed this stop as he was the only one who caught something—a blue gill and a large-mouth bass! Ruth enjoyed looking for butterflies and shells!

We then tried to go to the Old Time Soda Fountain at Rexall Drugs in Allerton—the only ice cream shoppe in all of Wayne County—but it’s only open on Saturday nights from 6:30-9:30pm  We did shop in one of the little downtown shops though, found a few neat old murals, and the Inn of the Six-Toed Cat!

We then made our way out to the Round Barn Site. Unfortunately, this site is only open on Sundays from 1-4pm, so we missed getting to go into it by just a day! It was still a neat site to check out!

We wrapped up the day in Corydon! We couldn’t pass up stopping at the site of the Jesse James robbery at Ocobock Bank in 1871.

We stopped and ate at one of the few restaurants in all of Wayne County—La Bota—for some delicious Mexican! We then spent the rest of the afternoon at the Prairie Trails Museum. This was an excellent museum with a ton of artefacts and information that walked you through the history of Wayne County. It really felt like you were stepping back in time to old Wayne County. A fun fact we learned at the museum was that Corydon was a major stop for the Mormon Trail; who would’ve known!

We thought we’d wrap up the day in Wayne County with a stop in New York, Iowa, only to find out all that’s left is a cemetery—not quite the metropolis as other New Yorks here in the States, but who knows what it was like in its prime!
