(34) Page County 6.9.2023

Our first stop in Page County was a failure as we had planned on going to the George Jay Drug Store in Shenandoah for the soda fountain, but upon our arrival we found out it was permanently closed. Luckily, a new donut shop, the Donut Stop, had opened up just a few doors down, and it was delicious!

Shenandoah has a quaint main street with the “Iowa Walk of Fame” all along the sidewalks.

We perused the main street area, stopping at the Carnegie Library!

This neat mural

The Greater Shenandoah Historical Museum which was closed for renovations

And the Everly Brothers Childhood Home Museum which was a little but very informative museum detailing the rise and success of the Everly Brothers.

The Depot Restaurant was also just off the main street so we stopped there for lunch! We may have been thwarted in Shelby County where we weren’t able to eat at a depot-turned restaurant—but we made up for it in Page County!

That wrapped up Shenandoah—onto Clarinda!

The Clarinda Carnegie Art Museum wasn’t open unfortunately so that is one to come back!

Clarinda has a neat courthouse and some boutiques and shops around the square.

We stopped at the Garrison Coffee House on the square before heading to the Glenn Miller Birthplace and Glenn Miller Birthplace Society Museum. This weekend was technically the Glenn Miller Festival, but we ended up opting out of attending any of the bands, including the famous Glenn Miller Orchestra because the tickets were a bit pricey, and we just weren’t sure how much the kids would appreciate it =D If you’re thinking of attending the Glenn Miller Festival, just be prepared to pay a “per-band fee”! But we did enjoy learning all about Glenn Miller at the Birthplace and Society Museum so we would definitely recommend a visit!

We then made our way to the Nodaway Valley Historical Museum only to find that it was closed, but thankfully we contacted the number on the door and one of the volunteers was kind enough to come open it up for us! It ended up being a really neat museum which covered so much of the history of Page County including the history of Jessie Shaumbaugh, the founder of 3H/4H

And more Glenn Miller relics!

Heading out of town, you can’t miss this Glenn Miller sign- I guess Shenandoah has one for the Everly Brothers, but we missed it—maybe next time!
