(40) Marshall County 3.9.2024

Although we devoted the 9th to Marshall County we did do a few attractions on March 7th as that is when we officially made our way to Marshall County. Marshall County is the birthplace of Travis so we also got to spend some time at the grandparents’ house while touring both Marshall and Butler County.

We got in on the evening of the 7th and went right away to Lillie Mae’s, a local chocolate shop. It’s changed over the years, but the chocolates were just as delicious.

Random photo in front of this random piece of art!

Then of course we had to stop at Travis’ middle school alma mater- Miller Middle School. They just happened to be practicing for a play that evening. The doors were open so we made our way in!

We ended the evening of the 7th with some original Taylor’s Maid-Rites!

Slumber party at grandma and grandpa's house!

We also enjoyed some of the Marshall County food at the end of our Butler County day, on the 8th. We decided to enjoy some of the authentic Mexican cuisine in Marshalltown with El Portal and La Michoacana Xtra Ice Cream.

Now, on our official Marshall County day, on the 9th, we started the day off in Albion where we first had to stop and take a picture by this United States Army artillery gun, owned by the owner of Raymon in Albion.

We then stopped for a quick snapshot in front of a hotel (now private residence) where Jesse James allegedly spent a summer back in 1879.

We made another stop at this 2-story log cabin circa 1856 just outside of Bangor.

We stopped by a few small towns along our way:

 Clemons grove

and St Anthony

And then made our way to State Center where we perused a few antique shops and enjoyed some of the local and historical landmarks:

 The Centre station Depot

The old school house

The library

Starry grove Sweet Treats for some coffee and yummy treats!

The Rose Garden, the rose capital of Iowa.. there were no roses this time of year so maybe one to come back to!

We made our way back to Marshalltown where we stopped to check out the Frank Lloyd Wright House, which is the last house he designed- this is also a private residence though so we tried to be considerate of that.

We tried to go to the Fisher Art Center, but alas it was closed so we headed uptown to the court house

And ate some Sub City for lunch of course!

We had wanted to go to the school house and Sower Glick House, but both of those were also closed

As was the Binford House (see below) and the Mowry Irvine House. We had called ahead to see about touring these historical landmarks, but unfortunately, they are only open Tuesday-Friday 10-3 so it didn’t work out.

Instead, we made our way to Travis’ boyhood home where he spent the first 2 years of his life ðŸ˜Š

We attempted to see the fossils at the Legrand Library and Heritage Museum, but it was also closed

We did get to see the Trumpeter Swans and Bison at Green Castle Recreational Area.

Lastly we tried to go to the antique store in Haverhill, but it was also closed.. so is this beautiful church.

We have decided that what Marshall County lacks in tourism, it makes up for in food as that might be our only reason to go back—except to see Grandma and Grandpa of course 😊
