(47) Humboldt County 8.17.2024

Humboldt (and it’s neighboring town Dakota City) hosted most of Humboldt County’s attractions so we spent our day exploring these 2 towns.

We started off at Caribbean Coffee

And then stopped by the Harry Reasoner Dam

And the Carnegie Library. What was interesting about this Carnegie Library is that it was made by local limestone as Gilmore City in Humboldt County is the limestone capital of Iowa and was once the limestone capital of the US.

We had to stop at the John Brown Park to see the Fay Hessian Fountain, designed by Father Paul Dobberstein, the same builder of the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend.

We couldn’t miss seeing the “Taft House,” the founder of Humboldt’s original house, which was also built with local limestone on 3 sides of the house.

And then headed to the main attraction of the day: Humboldt County Historical Museum. This complex is home to the Mill Farmhouse as well as various outbuildings, such as a replica of an 1800’s log cabin, a kettle shed with the biggest kettle we’ve ever seen, a school house, a chicken house, the Rutland jailhouse, and the old Hardy Methodist Church—all circa 1800’s.

We had to eat at the famous Pasquale’s Pizza for lunch

And on our way out of town went through Gotch State Park to check out where the East and West Des Moines Rivers converge to form the Des Moines River.
