(48) Appanoose County & (49) Monroe County 9.28.2024 & 9.29.2024

We did a little back and forth between Monroe and Appanoose County to make it so we could see the most of both counties so hang in there as we go back and forth 😊

On our way to our main stop in Appanoose County, we drove through Lovilia in Monroe County.

We found great support for Trump in this area. Throughout Monroe County we saw a ton of these “Trump” cars.. we couldn’t resist stopping to take a picture.. DISCLAIMER: the pictures in this blog are not necessarily representative of our political beliefs and values.. we are PRO-Jesus 2024

We stopped at JDT Antiques/Auctioneering in Monroe County

We also stopped to shop around the square in Monroe County. We were able to get some delicious coffee and tea from Common Grounds

Yummy baked goods from the French bakery, Nightingale Bakery

We went to some antique stores and boutiques and stopped to check out the Tea Parlor and found out they do a Victorian Stroll in December that would be fun to come back to!

We had to take a picture of the Monroe County Courthouse especially because we noticed they have a different statue than most of the courthouses in Iowa.

On our final drive to Centerville in Appanoose County, we got behind one of the parade entries

We finally made it to the Centerville Square for the 7th annual Pancake Day!!!

We shopped around the square and found this fun Centerville sign

We tried to go to the Coal Museum, but to our demise, it was closed for the day so the workers and volunteers could enjoy Pancake Day We were actually quite disappointed by this because we were interested in hearing about the unique coal mining history of the area.

We did enjoy the Pancake Day Parade though!

After the parade we went to the Continental Hotel for lunch

We got to snap a picture with the Dolorian that came up from Kansas City for the parade as the theme of the festival this year was “Back to the Future.”

They had some bubble stations set up around the square after the parade- it was so cool to see so many bubbles!

We drove through town to look at a few of the historical houses, notably the Sturdivant-Sawyer House (the founder of Drake University)

We then made our way to Honey Creek Resort where we enjoyed the water park and playing air hocky, foosball, bags, and arcade games.

On our search for some food, we stumbled across this unique teeter totter

We finally landed at the Marina for some dinner and it didn’t disappoint!

We started off Sunday morning in Appanoose County. On our search for breakfast, as again HCR is off by itself, we stopped by the Moravia Depot Complex.

They had a “nod” to James Stevens, author of Paul Bunyan, who’s boyhood home was in Moravia.

Dollar General saved our stomachs- donuts for the win!

We tried to go to the Lake Rathbun Fish Hatchery, but it was closed unfortunately

We headed back to Honey Creek Resort where we went on a bike ride. We rode our bikes to a playground in the park.

We also spent some more time at the water park and playing some of the games at the Resort.

We then headed back to Monroe County for the afternoon. We stopped at the Snack Shack for lunch

And then walked through the Welcome Home Soldier Monument. This was a very beautiful and well-done monument to the soldiers who have served in the different wars. We would highly recommend a walk through this monument.

We then stopped at the Dairy Bar for some ice cream.

We did finally get to learn a little more about the early 1900’s coal-mining town of Buxton at the Monroe County Historical Society Museum.

We may never make it to the Great Pyramids in Egypt, but we did make it to the “Great” Pyramids of Monroe County before wrapping up the county!
