(58) Cherokee County 6.22.2025
We also technically started Cherokee County on Friday (6.20.2025) so we could peruse the main street while shops were open since we knew most of the shops would be closed on Sunday. There were a lot of neat shops and definitely worth the stop!
Cherokee County
officially started off with a driving tour of many of the small towns spread
throughout the county:
Marcus
Cleghorn
Meriden
Our first real stop was the Fifty-Nine Grind Coffee Shop in Cherokee.
We had called to try to schedule a tour of the Cherokee Mental Health Institute (the Joseph Tallman Museum), but they weren’t able to find anyone available so we ended up just driving by to check out the grounds. It was wild to see how big the building and grounds were.
We headed to the main street area and checked out the:
historical Lewis Hotel
and did an audio
tour of the outside of the Historic Illinois Central Railroad Depot
Quick stop by the Carnegie Library, which is closed on Sundays.
Lunch at Carey’s Café
Did some
antiquing at Redefine Vintage and Antiques. We tried to stop by the Corner Flea
Market, but it was unexpectedly closed for the day ☹
We ended our
time in Cherokee County at Sanford Museum & Planetarium. We made sure to do
Cherokee County on a Sunday because they do showings in the Planetarium only on
Wednesdays and Sundays at 4pm! It was a good museum; the planetarium show was
short, but we thoroughly enjoyed it and are so glad we came on a Sunday to see
it!
