(64) Sac County 6.28.2026

We started off Sac County with a quick drive through Odebolt to check out the Peterson Pioneer Home and the Rural School Museum

And this random Cracker Jack House

These are all located across from the Odebolt Museum which is only open by appointment so we were not able to go today

We love seeing the main street areas of these small towns and Odebolt did not disappoint

One of the main attractions of the day was Lake View. First things first, we needed some sustenance so we stopped by Dorothy Jane’s Bakery for some donuts

And Milton’s Coffee for some fuel 😊

Lake View has a number of structures built during the depression era by the Civilian Conservation Corps (1934-1935). 

Our first CCC find was the Witch’s Tower in Black Hawk State Park

where we also went on a short hike

 Then we made our way over to Black Hawk Lake and took a picture in front of one of the Stone Piers built by the CCC

We also found the shelter house for the original location of the Mineral Springs which were once widely sought out for their medicinal properties. Unfortunately, the springs no longer exist, thanks to the CCC’s dredging of the lake ☹

We took a walk around the lake and found the other Stone Pier built by the CCC

And stopped to play some mini-golf . . . a definite must if you’re in the Lake View area!

Our intense game of mini-golf worked up our appetite so we stopped by Houdini’s Soda Fountain for some lunch.

We couldn’t leave Lake View without capturing a picture with Chief Black Hawk

And at least driving by the Lake View Historical Society Museum complex

The last main attraction for Sac County was of course the World’s Largest Popcorn Ball in Sac City! We were both, amazed at just how large this popcorn ball was, and disappointed that it is not free-standing but is held up by a large “bowl” of sorts.

The World’s Largest Popcorn Ball is held at the Sac City Museum Complex so we enjoyed looking around at all of the different buildings displaying early-Iowa life

We love ourselves a good train depot!

We also made sure to stop by the historical Stone Bridge

And Chautauqua Pavilion. We were literally blown away by the vast size of this pavilion!

Quick drive by the Sac County courthouse

 And the Carlson House, built in 1876

Onward to Wall Lake to tour the boyhood home of none other than Andy Williams

Along with the Wall Lake Depot Museum

 

The best part of the Depot Museum might have been this taxidermied 2-headed calf

We headed back to Lake View to wrap up the day with some fun in the water and some delicious ice cream back at Houdini’s Soda Fountain!
