Oh, Winnebago County, what do we say? The day started off so promising with peg board games and coffee at Royce’s Brew in Lake Mills
and such a fun round of FREE mini-golf (Lake Mills) ! Did you read that? FREE mini-golf!
We can’t say that was it, but pretty close, unfortunately ☹
We caught a
glimpse of the mural in downtown Lake Mills
And made sure to
stop at the Promise of America Sculpture on our way out of Lake Mills
We did stop in Leland. I didn’t get a picture because there wasn’t really anything to take a picture of—a nod to the truth sung by Kevin Costner of all people—we felt a deep connection to this song as we drove the streets of “Leland, Iowa” (click link below for your listening pleasure :D)
Our first stop in Forest City was this random “bicycle/bird/dinosaur” sculpture park
Every county in Iowa has this civil war monument, but this is the only painted and fountain version we have ever seen, so we could not pass up taking a picture with it!
We were headed to the Heritage Park of North Iowa when we came across this “Hancock County” sign! Whew, are we glad we saw this! We knew that Forest City was a double county as the Winnebago Factory is in Forest City but in Hancock County, but we almost missed that the Heritage Park is also in Hancock County—that was a close one—so we will have to save that one for Hancock!
Upon this
realization, we figured we’d better double check which county the tower at
Pilot Knob State Park is located in, and alas, it is also in Hancock County—we
will have to save that one as well!
Heading back into town after being thwarted by Hancock County, we stumbled across the original Forest City Depot.
We weren’t able to find any local restaurants for lunch so ended up eating snacks out of our car :P at Pammel Park
Where we were able to see the Swinging Bridge
And we found this awesome Viking Statue on the campus of Waldorf University- a nod to our favorite soccer player to watch in this year's World Cup--Erling Haaland!
After all the disappointments of the day, we were happy to find the Mansion Museum in Forest City was open for its regular scheduled tours.
And, a win for the end of Winnebago County, with delicious ice cream from Sweet Emmylu’s Ice Cream!
